Questo fine settimana lo zione è impegnato come ospite al Conestoga 9, che si terrà a Tulsa in Oklahoma.

Chissà che non ne esca qualche chicca.

GRRM said the series will probably total seven volumes. But it sounds as if he is being flexible about that, in case he keeps getting more new ideas that will result in additional volumes, as has already been the case with A Feast for Crows. He also said that the strange phenomenon of the fantasy world's long seasons will be explained in the final volume of the series.

GRRM said that he doesn't have a "Big Board" or a special computer program to keep all the events and characters straight. He says he does it all in his head, by means of using the brain cells that most people use to cope with everyday life!

GRRM said that his favorite character is Tyrion Lannister, and he identifies a lot with Tyrion. GRRM said the Tyrion chapters are very easy to write, and they seem to write themselves without any effort from him.

With regard to characterization and point of view, GRRM said that for any character who is a POV character he has to find something that he and readers can sympathize with even if the character in question does reprehensible things. He said there is always something he can find, or if not then it just won't be a POV character. Gregor Clegane, for example, could never be a POV character, but Jaime Lannister can be despite his bad actions, because there's more to Jaime than that. GRRM mentioned that Cersei will be a major POV character in A Feast for Crows. I was outraged by this and commented ""You just won't ever leave us any character we can purely hate, will you?". GRRM smiled at that, and that's when he gave the counter-example of Gregor Clegane.

I asked a lot of questions about the world-building involved in A Song of Ice and Fire--why the fantasy world is so earthlike in certain ways, with Caucasians in the northwest, Mongol-like Dothraki in the east, black people and zebras in the south, etc., and why some of the characters even have names from terrestrial languages such as Robert and Richard (Germanic) and Philip and Jason (Greek); his answers were that the earthlike characteristics of the flora, fauna, and ethnic groups were just something he wanted--in other words, no real answer at all--and that he viewed names such as Robert, Richard, Philip, and Jason as "neutral" names with no real ties to any language, whereas he would never give one of his characters a name such as Pierre because to him that isn't a "neutral" name. When I demurred about this, GRRM became rather testy and told me my problem was that I knew too much about languages.

The last question I asked him was about religion in his fantasy world.

I thought the religious tolerance in Westeros between tree-worshipers and worshipers of the Seven was remarkable. GRRM said there hadn't always been tolerance, and the situation as seen at the beginning of A Game of Thrones was a compromise that had been worked out after much conflict in the past. But this is a situation now changing with the introduction of Melisandre and her fanaticism regarding Rh'llor--essentially, religious tolerance is becoming a thing of the past in Westeros. When Robert Baratheon overcame the Targaryens, he opened up Westeros to all sorts of changes in tradition--thus, Cersei's unprecedented move in dismissing Ser Barristan Selmy from the Kingsguard, etc. Westeros is now in a state of flux.

But, on to book signing. There was a 3 book maximum per trip through the line. I was through the line in about 20 min. Which was nice. Mr. Martin had been through the dealers room and when I got up to have my books signed he asked about the swords and what we used them for. Turns out that he used to be a chess coach, and is very into the human chessmatch concept. I thought that was neat. I had brought the first two books in the series in paperback, but the 3rd in hardback, so I got a little more personalized autograph in the hardback. He signed it " To Chris- Keep your Swords Sharp! George RR Martin. " Which I personally thought was cool. After the signing he came back through the dealers room again and we got a chance to chat some more.

When noon rolled around I went to George RR Martin's reading. He read a chapter from the new novel, A Feast for Crows. It was a Sam chapter. Sam is the coward of the series, but quite possibly one of the smartest characters as well. Is was a very good chapter and lent a lot of insight into the direction that the new book is going. After the reading there was indeed time for Q&A. A couple of people had questions, but I sat front row center in my Bellie dance garb and asked the majority of the questions. Everything from how hard is it to write from a kid's point of view. ( Very, why do you think that the 4 year old character is in hiding?) Are you going to do a time jump to age the kids? ( Nope too many balls in the air for the adults, but there has been 3 years already to pass in the books so they are growing up). Who is your favorite character? A cliche but I had to ask. ( Tyrion, For a lot of very detailed reasons that I don't have enough space to write.) My favorite character too. Where did you come up with the idea of writing from so many perspectives and why? ( Also a long answer, but the jist of it is from the Wild Cards mosaic novels, and so that you could see the stories from a lot of angles without the great author wink wink nudge nudge, so that you know what is going on even if the main character doesn't.)

George R.R. Martin ha detto che la serie avrà probabilmente un totale di sette volumi. Ma pare che comunque questo dato sia molto flessibile, qualora avesse nuove idee non esiterebbe comunque ad aggiungere altri libri, come è avvenuto proprio nel caso di A FEAST FOR CROWS. In più, Martin ha anche detto che lo strano fenomeno fantasy delle stagioni che durano così tanto sarà spiegato nell'ultimo capitolo della saga.

Martin ha anche detto che non ha una "Lavagna Enorme" o un computer speciale per ricordare di tutti gli eventi e gli accadimenti dei personaggi. Dice che ha tutto quanto nella sua zucca, usando le stesse cellule cerebrali che tutti usano nella vita di ogni giorno!

Martin ha poi ribadito che il suo personaggio preferito è Tyrion Lannister, e che in lui si identifica più che molto. A detta sua, i PDV di Tyrion sono davvero facili da scrivere, gli vengono proprio fuori spontanei, senza sforzi.

Riguardo poi la scelta dei personaggi e le loro caratterizzazioni nei PDV, Martin ha detto essere assolutamente VITALE che in OGNI personaggio protagonista di un PDV ci sia qualcosa con cui il lettore possa simpatizzare, anche quando il personaggio in questione fa cose che magari il lettore non gradirebbe e non gradirà. C'è sempre qualcosa che potrebbe trovare a questo riguardo, e qualora questo qualcosa non ci fosse semplicemente quel personaggio non sarebbe protagonista di PDV.
Gregor Clegane, ad esempio, non potrebbe mai essere un personaggio da PDV, ma Jaime Lannister invece ha potuto esserlo nonostante le sue cattive azioni perché in Jaime c'è più che qualche cattiva azione. E questo lo abbiamo visto tutti.
Martin ha poi ricordato che Cersei sarà tra i personaggi da PDV più importanti di A FEAST FOR CROWS.
Io ne ero veramente seccata e ho commentato: "Non vuoi proprio lasciarci neanche un personaggio che possiamo semplicemente odiare fino alla fine, vero?" Martin ha sorriso e mi ha semplicemente citato Gregor Clegane...

Ho anche chiesto molte domande sul perché questo mondo delle Cronache del Ghiaccio e del Fuoco sia così reale al "nostro mondo"--perché questo mondo fantasy appare per certi versi talmente reale, con il Caucaso a nord-ovest, i Dothraki-Mongoli a oriente, gente scusa di belle e zebre a sud, eccetera eccetera, e perché poi alcuni nomi siano proprio tratti dal mondo reale, come Robert e Richard (Tedeschi) o Philip e Jason (Greci); e lui ha risposto che le caratteristiche simili al "nostro mondo" per la flora, la fauna o le etnie era solo qualcosa che voleva--in altre parole, non una vera e propria risposta--e che ha sempre visto i nomi come Robert, Richard, Philip e Jason come nomi "parziali", senza una vera e propria appartenenza ad alcuna lingua, infatti non ha e non avrebbe comunque mai chiamato nessun personaggio "Pierre", perché quel nome non sarebbe "parziale" linguisticamente parlando ma al contrario sarebbe troppo identificabile in una sola lingua.
Quando ho sollevato delle obiezioni su questo, Martin deve essersi un po' stizzito e ha detto che il mio problema era solo che sapevo pure troppo di lingue.

L'ultima domanda che gli ho chiesto riguardava la religione nel suo mondo di fantasia.

Avevo pensato che questa veramente enorme tolleranza religiosa tra tre religioni diverse nei Sette Regni fosse davvero un po' troppo strana. Martin ha detto che questa tolleranza tra le tre religioni (I Sette Dèi, gli Antichi Dèi del Nord e gli Alberi-Cuore e R'hllor, NdT) non è sempre esistita, anzi, quella situazione di pace e accordo tra le tre religioni che si vede all'inizio di A GAME OF THRONES è il frutto di parecchi contrasti nel passato. Ora invece questa situazione ricomincia a precipitare a causa di Melisandre e del suo fanatismo per R'hllor--Insomma, il rispetto reciproco tra le religioni sta cominciando ad essere parte del passato, nel Westeros. Quando Robert Baratheon sconfisse i Targaryen, non impose nulla e permise ogni tipo di cambiamenti e scelte personali differenti dalla tradizione--questo come segno di miglioramento, però, come la mossa di Cersei di liquidare ser Barristan Selmy dalla Guardia reale è invece uno scavalcamento in peggio della tradizione, appunto, il Westeros che decade, come detto prima.

E finalmente si arriva all'autografare i libri. Martin avrebbe firmato un massimo di tre libri per gruppo di fila. Sono riuscita a superare la fila in 20 minuti, il che è stato una buona cosa. Martin se ne è andato dalla stanza delle conferenze e quando finalmente mi ha raggiunta per autografare i miei libri mi ha chiesto delle spade e cosa avevamo usato per farle (Evidentemente si tratta tutto di robe locali, e riguardo le spade, dev'essere un regalo della loro Community, ma non credo si trattasse di spade vere, anche se non lo dice, altrimenti Martin non chiederebbe con cosa le hanno fatte, no? Mi ci fermo a riflettere perché era stato detto che avremmo potuto regalargliene... NdT).
Alla fine viene fuori che Martin era un allenatore di Scacchi, e che ne è anche appassionato. Due dei tre libri che gli ho portato erano con la copertina cartacea, ma il terzo era con la copertina rilegata, così mi sono beccata un autografo un po' più personalizzato sulla copertina. Ha firmato: "A Chris-Tieni le tue spade ben affilate! George RR Martin." Cosa che mi ha mandato in visibilio. Dopo gli autografi Martin è tornato nella sala conferenze e abbiamo avuto la possibilità di chiacchierare un altro po'.

Intorno a mezzogiorno sono andata a sentire George R.R. Martin leggere. Ha letto un intero capitolo dal nuovo libro, A FEAST FOR CROWS. Era un capitolo di Sam. In teoria, Sam è il codardo della serie, ma sta anche diventando di gran lunga quello più positivo. Il capitolo era davvero bello e focalizzava molti punti che saranno centrali del libro. Finita la lettura, era il momento delle domande.
Più di qualcuno aveva delle domande, ma io ero seduta nella fila centrale e con i miei soliti modi tanto gentili ho fatto la maggior parte delle domande. Ci ha detto quanto può essere difficile scrivere un PDV di un bambino.
"Cosa credete, per quale altro motivo un personaggio di 4 anni è sparito dalla scena?"

Quindi ho chiesto: "Farai fare un piccolo salto d'età ai bambini, allora?"
"No, per adesso la grana è tutta per gli attuali adulti, e comunque in questi tre libri sono passati ben tre anni nei quali sono cresciuti anche loro"

"Chi è il tuo personaggio preferito?" Una cretinata, ma dovevo chiederglielo.
"Tyrion", è stata la risposta, e ha dato anche un sacco di dettagliate spiegazioni che non sto a riportarvi per motivi di spazio. Mica male, Tyrion è anche il mio personaggio preferito.

"Da dove hai preso l'idea di scrivere una storia da così tante e diverse prospettive, e perché?"
Anche qui la risposta è stata lunghissima, ma in sostanza l'idea l'ha presa dai giochi di ruolo con le carte Wild Cards, e poi così puoi vedere la storia da parecchie prospettive senza un unico grande autore che ti ficca in testa tutte le panzane che vuole e pensa lui, in modo che tu magari sappia cose che il personaggio del libro invece non sa.

Grande renly, come sempre sei insostituibile! un brindisi al fratellino!
